Houston Student becomes “All He Can! Be”

Upon first glance Derrek Williams may seem like a typical 19-year-old guy. He goes to school, makes good grades and is a star pupil here at the Can!. What you may not know about him is that he is already a Private in the United States Army, is married, and has two beautiful kids.

However, things have not always been this way. Before coming to Houston Can! Academy Derrek was a “faceless” student at another Houston area high school. “I wasn’t learning there because they always had me out of class for discipline problems,” said Derrek.

After getting fed-up with the system at his last school Derrek though about giving Houston Can! Academy a chance. Derrek said, “My brother went here and graduated in 2005, so I knew this was a good school.”

Shortly after enrolling in Houston Can! Academy, someone said something very interesting to him, they spoke to him about his future. After some thinking and talking with his mom, who didn’t approve initially, he decided to join the Army. “I met the recruiter at Houston Can! and I am happy I did,” says Derrek with a smile on his face.

On February 9, 2006 Derrek officially signed up with the United States Army. He then went on to start basic training during his summer break from school in 2006. Derrek graduated on January 25, 2007, and will start AIT training in Gulfport, Mississippi on February 7, 2007.

Here at Houston Can! Academy he credits his teachers and counselor, Mr. Hatton, Mr. Bush, Mr. Cavil, Mr. Gentry and Mr. Dickey with being positive male role models who actually took the time to teach life lessons along with a formal education.

“Mr. Hatton taught me to express my feelings openly,” say Derrek. He also stated, “Mr. Dickey gave me a lot of one on one time.” After completing basic training, Derrek was having second thoughts about returning the school all together. “Mr. Dickey convinced me to come back to Houston Can! and finish school, he actually came to my house and talked to me,” said Derrek.

Derrek was married to Antonia Williams in 2006. They are the parents of two little girls, Mikala and Denise. He said that his family will travel with him wherever he goes with the Army. After serving as an active soldier, Derrek plans on retiring from the Army ultimately.
